PYYNIKKI CRAFT BREWERY’S VAHVAPORTTERI VOTED BEST IN CLASS IN BERLIN

Vahvaportteri, a strong porter brewed by the Tampere-based Pyynikki Craft Brewery (Pyynikin käsityöläispanimo) was named the best craft porter in the world in the Global Craft Beer Award 2014 competition. The judging was held on 24–26 July, during the Global Craft Beer Festival in Berlin. More than 60 brewers from all over the world, participated in the competition, organised by the Global Association of Craft Beer Brewers (GACBB). Judging the beers were an international jury of experts in the brewing industry.

The coup comes after the operations of Pyynikki Craft Brewery were threatened this spring, by a fire that ravaged the brewery. The blaze destroyed a lot of equipment and did great damage to the facilities, interrupting brewing operations for months. After the spring’s hardships, the gold medal from Berlin was welcomed with great joy. International recognition also provides hope for the future.

A BOOST TO FINNISH BEER CULTURE AND TO EMPLOYMENT

The ‘father’ of Vahvaportteri, Tuomas Pere, considers it very important that the winner was selected by colleagues who understand the brewing process, beer styles, innovation, and commercialisation, along with how these elements come together.
̒For example, the positive feedback provided by the distinguished Harpoon Brewery was very nice to receive. I believe that our victory also strengthens Finnish beer culture and, as a result, provides more jobs in the industry,’ says Pere.

The restaurants have already given Vahvaportteri a very warm welcome, and order volumes point to a clear increase in sales. Because the award-winning brew is a ‘strong beer’ under Finnish law (more than 4.7% alcohol by volume), Vahvaportteri is available for home use only from Alko, by special order, and the legislation does not allow direct sales to consumers in the same way that such products as Finnish berry wines or sahti can be sold by the producer. However, Pyynikki Craft Brewery is working to develop a customer-oriented service that allows the beers to be ordered and delivered straight to the customer’s doorstep.
